New Training Sessions
The HUD Grant Village Self Sufficiency program has linked up with Lillian Peltier Brower Arnold to offer these exciting new topics:
- Community Resource Management - Learn how to strengthen your community through Community Resource Management. This workshop teaches how to find and map community resources and by doing so, see where there are gaps in services. Where is your community’s emergency public shelter; who has a generator that could be used if power is lost; where can a resident find access to computer skills? How does a community develop a directory of resources? What should be included in a Community Resource Directory?
- Community Emergency Training - Are you interested in learning how to be prepared in an emergency or disaster? Neighborhood Emergency Training (NET) gives you a plan for being prepared, helping your family, neighbors and community, and what to expect. Learn what supplies to keep on hand, how to help those who are disabled, and what resources are available in your community and borough.
- Money Management - Do you need to figure out how to pay all of your bills every month? Are you working toward a big purchase? Something for your home...a refrigerator, couch? A new snow machine? Maybe you would like to have the money to take a vacation or go to college. Learning how to manage your income and expenses will give you more control over your future.
Words from Lillian:
I'm looking forward to being back in the villages offering trainings toward community self sufficiency.
The last time I was in the North Slope Villages was in 1987. Wow, that was over 20 years ago, when my son, Clint, was born. In the 70s and 80s, I was a specialist working for families with disabled children, but once in the villages, I helped with everything from vision and hearing screenings to helping elders with hearing aids that weren’t working right. In the evenings, the borough veterinarian would have me help with surgeries. There were cavities to count for all the school kids and community dinners to help cook and clean up afterwards. In Pt. Lay we tried to get everything done before 9pm when the village generator was turned off. In Pt. Hope, I had to be at the Lane’s home, where I stayed, in time for Dallas so I didn’t come in while the show was on and disturb everybody. In Nuiqsut, there was the little Itinerant house.
Lots of great memories from across the Slope, and looking forward to many more!
Quyanaq,
Lillian Peltier Brower Arnold
